<description>School of Humans + iHeartMediaTom Slick: Mystery HunterAssistant director and producerNOMINATED: 2025 Ambie Awards - “Best Fiction Podcast”
“Tom Slick: Mystery Hunter” chronicles the larger than life adventures of Tom Slick (Owen Wilson) and his steadfast pursuit of the unknown, culminating to one of his greatest and most mystifying expeditions: his 1958 hunt for the Yeti. Tom Slick’s epic story is told through hidden tapes found by his granddaughter Liv Slick (Schuyler Fisk) in the attic of her mother, Claire Slick (Sissy Spacek). What is a climactic tale of a legendary man and his hunt for the Yeti is, for Liv, the discovery of a grandfather whose life was largely shrouded in mystery… until now.

Afterlives: Marsha P. Johnson
Executive producerWINNER: 2025 Signal Awards - “Limited Series - LGBTQ+”
Marsha P. Johnson is THE icon of the LGBTQ+ movement and one of the mothers of the fight for trans rights. Host Raquel Willis brings Marsha’s story to life through rare archival interviews and intimate conversations with queer elders, friends, and historians. Legend says she threw the first brick at the Stonewall riots, setting off the modern movement for queer rights. Immortalized by Warhol and known as “The Saint of Christopher Street,” Marsha was also unhoused, surviving through sex work, navigating violence, and resisting with joy. More than 30 years after her still-unsolved death in the Hudson River, Marsha’s voice resounds louder than ever. As trans rights face renewed threats, Afterlives celebrates Marsha’s story and reflects on her enduring power as a trans ancestor.

Let’s Start A Coup!
Senior producer&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;
What would you do if a secret cabal of the nation’s most powerful people asked you to overthrow the President? Weirdly enough – it’s not a hypothetical. It almost happened to FDR in the 1930s, were it not for a very intense, very problematic Marine named Major General Smedley Butler. Join Ben Bowlin, Alex French, and a cast of historical characters brought to life by Joe Kinosian for a darkly comedic – and terrifying – retelling of one of the weirdest forgotten schemes in American history.

	What Happened in Nashville
Senior producer“What Happened in Nashville” is a deeply reported investigation into the sudden collapse of a Tennessee fertility clinic, and the patients caught in the fallout. When the Center for Reproductive Health shut down without warning, people lost access to their embryos, their treatments were abruptly cut off, and many were left scrambling to recover money, medical records, and time they couldn’t afford to lose.
Through intimate conversations with the patients who lived through it, host Melissa Jeltsen reveals the emotional and physical toll of the clinic’s abrupt closure. But the story reaches far beyond a single clinic. The series exposes the cracks in a fertility industry built on hope, high price tags and minimal oversight.&#38;nbsp;

A deep look inside a decades-long saga broiling with deceit, palace gossip, and political backstabbing—shedding light on the machinations of the most secretive nation on the planet.

Bad Seeds
Senior producerThe biggest black market you’ve never heard of is blooming right under your nose. Whether it’s a 4,000-pound cactus shoveled from the Arizona desert or delicate orchids pinched from the tangled jungle of Peru, rare plants are at the center of a rapidly growing and lucrative world of crime. Hosted by plant expert Summer Rayne Oakes, Bad Seeds plunges straight into it, featuring the buyers, the sellers, the obsessives, and those who came face-to-face with the criminals behind an underworld few know exist.

Senior producerRep is a bold, wide-ranging podcast, brought to you by journalist Noor Tagouri. Noor began by examining the misrepresentation of Muslims in US media and how this impacts American culture. She discovered a fuller exploration of the ever-evolving story of America, which challenged the stories we’ve known…and revealed how the stories we tell affect all of us. Rep is a thoughtful investigation of our beliefs and understandings and how they exist within the dynamic of politics, pop culture, and public opinion. This is a story about the stories we tell.

Enter 'Mirrorland' — And Atlanta's Land of Oz — With Hip-Hop Duo EarthGang
2019 is a big year for Atlanta hip-hop duo EarthGang. Earlier this year, their label, Dreamville — that's rapper J. Cole's Interscope Records imprint — released a multi-artist album called Revenge of the Dreamers 3. It debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart.

And Friday, they drop their own Dreamville project into the world: the highly anticipated album Mirrorland. &#38;nbsp;Olu (a.k.a. Johnny Venus) and WowGr8 (a.k.a. Doctur Dot), the pair who make up EarthGang, joined On Second Thought to talk about their music and influences.

How Coronavirus Is Threatening The Arts And Culture Ecosystem — And May Usher In A New Period Of ArtArtists and arts organizations were quick to adapt to quarantine and coronavirus. Museum tours, operas, Broadway shows, author talks, home concerts and classes for kids sprung up online shortly after closures were announced.

But as the dust begins to settle on our new normal, many worry about the long-term economic impact and outlook for the artists, performers and independent organizations essential to the cultural ecosystem.

George Gershwin's 'Porgy And Bess' And Its Complicated Legacy Around RaceWhile not many operas were written in English, George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess is one of the most celebrated — and perhaps the most controversial.
Although the production provided roles for African American performers during a time when minstrelsy was still prevalent, criticism of the opera's representation of black culture, life and dialect have followed Gershwin's piece, from 1935, for decades.
The Atlanta Opera is staging Porgy and Bess for five performances between Mar. 7 and 15. Part of this production has included programming to discuss the racial dilemma presented by Gershwin's opera.

Rebels and Ramblers: New Ken Burns 'Country Music' Documentary
From the Civil War to the Dust Bowl and from baseball to jazz, Ken Burns documentaries have covered a range of critical events in American history and culture. Now, country music is getting the Ken Burns treatment.

He and long-time collaborators and producers Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey spent eight years researching and making an eight-part, 16-hour documentary called Country Music, which will air on PBS stations like GPB in September.

Pioneering Punk Band X On The Evolution Of L.A. Punk — And What It Means In 'The New World'The first wave of punk rock growled out of the economic and social malaise of New York and London in the mid-1970s. But Los Angeles played a huge role in what came next, when punk's energetic D.I.Y. ethos began to diversify, cross genres and sprawl like the vast city itself.
One of the groups that sprouted in that time was the seminal punk band X. John Doe and Exene Cervenka, founding members of the band X, joined On Second Thought to share the history of that LA punk scene as they experienced it, how times have changed since then, and what it means to be punk rock in the modern world.

Atlanta-Based Musician Curtis Harding Dishes Out 'Slop 'n' Soul' Anthems
You may have heard Curtis Harding's voice before, perhaps without realizing it. That's because, for a number of years, he worked with a familiar Atlanta native: CeeLo Green. Harding sang back-up vocals for CeeLo and even co-wrote songs with the Grammy Award-winning musician, like "Grand Canyon" — which was a bonus track on CeeLo's 2010 album, The Lady Killer.

After that and several other collaborations, Harding launched his solo career, applying his distinctive falsetto vocals to his own style of music, which he calls "slop 'n' soul." He joined On Second Thought to talk about his music and career.

The Capers And Creative Journey of Atlanta Band The Black Lips
Atlanta's own Black Lips is a band that keeps audiences on their toes, literally — which you'd know if you've ever landed in the mosh pit at one of their shows — and figuratively, given that the latest it-bag line from Gucci is named after band member Zumi Rosow.

For 20 years, founding members Cole Alexander and Jared Swilley have been making unruly garage rock, rockabilly records, and sometimes, they can sound like old country crooners.&#38;nbsp;Swilley and Alexander spoke with On Second Thought while on the road, from The Studio in Portland, Maine, describing their journey from Dunwoody High School to recording with Yoko Ono.&#38;nbsp;

Atlanta Locals The Coathangers Bring Their 'Compassionate Punk' To Music Midtown
Music Midtown begins Saturday! This year, 25 years after it first began, the two-day festival will feature acts like Travis Scott, Cardi B, Lizzo and Vampire Weekend. And on Sunday at 1 p.m., you can catch Atlanta locals, The Coathangers.

First, drummer Stephanie Luke and bassist Meredith Franco, two members of the garage punk trio, joined On Second Thought to talk about how they started playing music together, what it's like being an all-female punk band in the music industry and what "punk" means to them.

'Undocorridos': Athens Resident Gives A New Name To A Mexican Musical Tradition"Corridos" are a traditional form of storytelling through song, which became widely popular during the Mexican Revolution. They often tell stories of history, oppression, the common human experience and cultural heroes. These songs chronicle life (and sometimes death) in an easily shared and consumed format.

A new album by Athens-based musician and activist Beto Cacao carries on the tradition of this musical form. It's called Undocorridos: Songs of the Stories and Struggles of the Undocumented in the USA.

Cacao spoke to On Second Thought from WUGA in Athens to explain more.

Atlanta's Original Old Town Road: The Site of Country Music's First Hit Could Be DemolishedThe newest Ken Burns series premiering in September follows the vast and varied evolution of country music over the 20th century. The eight-part series begins not in Nashville, nor Bristol, but Atlanta.

That's because, in 1923, OKeh Records music pioneer Ralph Peer came from New York to the South and set up a temporary recording studio smack dab in downtown Atlanta at 152 Nassau Street. That's where he recorded early country, blues, jazz and gospel artists, including what is known as country music's first hit, "The Little Old Log Cabin in the Lane" by Fiddlin' John Carson.

Allison Moorer's 'Blood' Explores Trauma — and Healing — Through Music and ProseSinger-songwriter Allison Moorer has recently released her 11th album, along with a companion memoir. They are both called Blood.
They tell a story she's avoided talking about directly throughout her career. When Allison was 14 years old, her father killed her mother - and then himself - leaving Moorer and her sister, the singer Shelby Lynne, orphans.
Moorer spoke with On Second Thought about why she decided to tell the story now, through music and prose, as she worked on her first memoir.

Breaking Ground On The Future Of Georgia Arts: The Goat Farm's $250 Million Transformation
The Goat Farm recently announced a $250 million transformation. Anthony Harper, founder and co-owner of the arts compound, joined On Second Thought to explain how this will allow them to both preserve most of the existing structures on the property while expanding the facilities and scope of their programs. He also discussed what they hope this will achieve for Georgia's arts community.

Hear Sibelius' Rousing 'Finlandia' — Symbolizing The Finnish Spirit — At Atlanta Symphony OrchestraThe Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 75th anniversary with special events throughout the season. Next week, Thomas Søndergård returns to Atlanta to conduct music by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius – including his most famous piece,&#38;nbsp; a tone poem called "Finlandia."

Composed in 1899, "Finlandia" has its roots in political protest. After Russia, which ruled Finland at the time, sought to control the small Nordic country through press censorship and other restrictions, Finnish artists responded by creating art to express their opposition.&#38;nbsp;

Including Sibelius.

Robyn Hitchcock Talks British Negativity And The Next Generation Before Eddie's Attic PerformancesEnglish singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock has been making music for more than 40 years now. Inspired by pop rock from the likes of The Beatles, his tunes vary from jangly psychedelia to somber acoustic numbers.

Hitchcock has released more than 20 records, whether under his own name or as member of The Soft Boys, a band he founded in 1976. Hitchcock's music has been inspired by rock 'n' roll forerunners and his peers and has, in turn, influenced a number of other acts. Athens band R.E.M., for example, covered one of his songs, called "Arms of Love."

'Cool Town': Author Grace Hale On How The Athens Music Scene Launched A New American BohemiaAthens, Georgia was a sleepy Southern college town in the late 1970s and early ‘80s. Bulldogs football and an established fraternity and sorority scene dominated social life on the University of Georgia campus.

But something else was percolating in the shadows of Milledge Avenue: a creative underground as vibrant and subversive as any you might find in the country’s major cities. It was in this period that Athens became the site of one of the most influential regional music scenes of the late 20th century, spawning ground-breaking bands like The B-52’s, Pylon, R.E.M., and countless others.

The Intergenerational Power In Margaret Wilkerson Sexton's New Book 'The Revisoners'Ava King is a newly divorced mother of a teenage son when she moves into her grandmother’s posh New Orleans home. Ava is the descendant of slaves, grandma Martha is about as WASP-y as they come, and their connected pasts are one of the plot twists in The Revisioners, a new novel by National Book Award finalist Margaret Wilkerson Sexton.

There is some magic in The Revisioners, but it’s less fantasy than testament to intergenerational bonds — in this case between Ava and her great-great-great grandmother, born enslaved on a Louisiana plantation.

Margaret Wilkerson Sexton joined On Second Thought to unpack her vision for The Revisioners, and her aim to look deeper at the power passed down through generations of African American families.

Ahmaud Arbery's Family, Friends Reflect On His Life, Death And The Path To JusticeThe last 35 seconds of Ahmaud Arbery’s life have been viewed, studied, dissected and discussed all over the world. That’s because of a video that went viral, showing his final moments before he was shot on a shady street in Satilla Shores, Georgia on February 23.
And while his death has made international headlines, the people of his community remember Arbery for how he lived. His mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones joined On Second Thought – along with Arbery’s close friends Akeem Baker and Demetris Frazier and his former football coach Jason Vaughn – to reflect on Ahmaud Arbery's life and death, and the injustices that followed. Jim Barger Jr., who wrote an article for The Bitter Southerner about the history and response of the community, also joined the conversation.

Georgians Demand Justice: The Messages And Momentum Behind The George Floyd ProtestsSince George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25, rage that had accumulated over centuries of racial violence spilled into the nation's streets.

From Atlanta, Macon and Savannah to London, Amsterdam and Paris, protesters are flooding streets that, only weeks ago, stood nearly empty due to fears of COVID-19. The crowds are unprecedented in their size, diversity and condemnation of police brutality and systemic racial injustice. Despite early property damage, largely peaceful protests have gained momentum over the course of the last week.

Political Rewind: As Georgia Counts Votes, Chaos Unfolds At Nation's CapitolWednesday afternoon on Political Rewind: As the day the last votes are tabulated in Georgia's Senate runoff election, chaos erupts at the U.S. Capitol. Supporters of President Donald Trump assault the U.S. Capitol, storming the building.
We covered the breaking news as situations in the capital escalated in the afternoon. This followed a rally nearby where Trump unleashed a barrage of baseless accusations of election fraud in Georgia and other states.

Meanwhile, the Rev. Raphael Warnock has been elected the first African American U.S. senator from Georgia. The focus then turned to the race between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican incumbent David Perdue, which has since been called for Ossoff.

Political Rewind: After U.S. Capitol Siege, Nation And Georgia Ask, Where Do We Go From Here?Thursday on Political Rewind: Georgia and the nation’s capital saw a day of triumph and turmoil on Wednesday. Democrats celebrated the twin victories of Georgians Jon Ossoff and the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who now give their party control of the U.S. Senate. Warnock will be the first Black man to represent Georgia in Congress while Ossoff will be Georgia's first Jewish senator.

Also, in the early hours of this morning, Congress officially affirmed the Electoral College victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

But these milestone events were overshadowed, at least for a time, by chaos incited by President Donald Trump. His supporters invaded the U.S. Capitol, forcing&#38;nbsp;an evacuation.

Political Rewind: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Life And Legacy — And The Political Battle To ComeMonday on Political Rewind, we paid tribute to the career and legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. What are the landmark moments of her life and career that made her such an icon, particularly for American women?

And now, as we head into the final stretch before the 2020 election, a look at the monumental battle that’s unfolding in Washington to fill her seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Political Rewind: After Breonna Taylor Grand Jury Decision, Deconstructing The #Defund MovementThursday on Political Rewind, the grand jury’s decision in the Breonna Taylor case has again raised questions and concerns about police accountability and conduct. In the aftermath of protests in cities across the country last night, we take a deeper look at the movement to reform and reimagine the police.

We unpack what "defunding" the police could actually mean and look like, and how that could change the role of police in our communities.

Supporting Youth Mental Health: Are Georgia Schools Ready?Even before the pandemic, access to mental health care and resources for youth was a concern in Georgia, which ranks 47th out of 50 states for access to mental health care and resources for the general population. But as the pandemic compounds stressors, pushing well-being to the limit over the last five months, providers predict things will get worse as students transition back to school. On Second Thought collaborated with American Public Media’s “Call to Mind” initiative, a national program to encourage new conversations about mental health, to put together a&#38;nbsp;panel to discuss&#38;nbsp;one central question: are Georgia schools prepared to support student mental health under these circumstances?

With Lack of Pandemic Protections, Fears — And Coronavirus — Spread Among Georgia ICE Detainees
While protests set off by the killing of George Floyd show no signs of letting up, another quieter protest has been stirring at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Irwin County, Georgia.

There, a group of detainees staged a hunger strike and protest over video chat to raise the alarm over a lack of precautions against the spread of COVID-19 inside the detention center.

The Merits, Risks And Politics of Sweden's Herd Immunity Strategy
Compared to the lockdowns and shuttered businesses in countries across the world, Sweden is an outlier. Swedish officials have advised citizens to work from home and avoid travel, but most schools and businesses have remained open.

This relaxed approach aims to minimize impact on the economy and slow the spread of the virus through what is known as “herd immunity.” But striving for herd immunity without a controlled vaccine in place can also prove risky.&#38;nbsp;Now, as the U.S. weighs further spreading the disease against the impact of a tanked economy, some Americans — particularly conservatives — are looking toward Sweden’s model as an option.

How The Coronavirus Pandemic Invites Digital Dangers — From New Hacks To Privacy Concerns
While online scams are always a danger, malware and phishing attacks have skyrocketed in the past two weeks. Many of these schemes have found new opportunities through the growing fear and concern over coronavirus. And now, millions of Americans are working and learning from home to help halt the spread of the disease — and find themselves without the protections (or IT help) found in most offices and schools.

And in some countries, the virus has upped the ante on government surveillance of online activity.&#38;nbsp;On Second Thought spoke with both Brendan Saltaformaggio, professor at Georgia Tech specializing in cybersecurity, and Alfred Ng, senior reporter at CNET, about new concerns regarding data privacy and security during the pandemic.

How The Coronavirus Pandemic Magnifies Health Inequities - And Why Mitigation MattersThe coronavirus pandemic has led to travel restrictions, canceled events, school closures, consumer panic, and mayhem in stock markets across the world.

The spiraling fears and slow access to tests for the virus in the U.S. have exposed weak points in government and health care systems, as well as the social fabric upon which we rely — especially for the most vulnerable.

Agricultural Markets Demand More Maintenance — But Georgia Farmers Face Weather, Labor Challenges
Farmers in Georgia have been impacted by a multitude of events in the last few years: hurricanes, stalled aid, trade policy and, on top of that, drought.

In September, the Southeast saw record heat — with little to no rain. Now, there is lots of rain in the forecast for the coming week. On Second Thought checked in with onion farmer Aries Haygood of A&#38;amp;M Farms in Lyons, Georgia, to hear about the issues impacting farmers.

Georgia Abortion Bill Redefines 'Personhood' — And Raises ConfusionThe state of Georgia — and the country — is divided over so-called "heartbeat" bills and other new state laws restricting abortion. Many are confused about who could be prosecuted and what, exactly, constitutes a violation of the law.

On Second Thought leaves the flashpoints of politics behind and attempts to get some clarity on the legal questions raised by HB 481. We explore what these abortion bans could mean for miscarriages, prosecution and due process — and potential consequences of redefining what it means to be a "person."

Roundtable Discussion Unpacks Realities — And New Definitions — Of Beauty In The Black Community
A Nielsen report from 2018 shows that black women and men spend disproportionately more on beauty products than other demographic groups. And with Hair Love winning best animated short at this year’s Oscars, the conversation around black hair — and standards of beauty within the black community — continues to evolve.

While the mainstream hair and beauty industry has not always been there to meet demand, black innovators and entrepreneurs have frequently taken it upon themselves to develop their own solutions. On Second Thought sat down with three people working to bring both awareness and new offerings to the cultural conversation on beauty standards in the black community.

Political Rewind: Clint Smith's Journey Into The History And Narratives Of Slavery In The U.S.Winston Churchill is credited as saying that “History is written by the victors.” Or, in other words, the history we consume is not necessarily based in fact, but rather the interpretations and perspectives of those who hold power. Now, when it comes to the U.S. Civil War, history shows us that Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia in 1865.

Yet it’s not uncommon to hear the phrase “The south won the Civil War” – not in fact, but in a battle of culture, memory and writing history. The abolition of slavery did not stop the racial terror that emerged in postwar United States, and the narrative of the Confederate cause did not surrender alongside General Lee.

Today, we can see how that is reflected in the histories we teach to our children and in how we contextualize the physical landmarks and monuments that represent the country’s past – both in ways that are honest, and ways that are not.

Clint Smith’s new book, How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America, takes readers on a tour of these monuments, memorials, and landmarks to offer a contemporary portrait of how slavery – and slave-owning – have shaped our nation’s collective history.

Beloved Atlanta Mailman 'Mr. Floyd': A Life of Service and Activism
Neighbors are still missing their newly retired mailman.

Floyd Martin was a beloved mail carrier who worked the same route in Marietta for nearly 35 years. So beloved, in fact, that when he retired a few weeks ago, the community he served so well started a GoFundMe page to send him to Hawaii. Delta Air Lines pitched in too — providing airfare.

Known as "Mister Floyd" to his Marietta residents, Floyd Martin joined On Second Thought in the studio to reflect on his life and career with the postal service.

Amid Movement For Racial Justice, The Need For Rebellious Art — And Uncomfortable Conversations
Today, in celebration of Juneteenth, Power Haus Creative has organized what they’re calling the “Juneteenth Takeover” – in which 19 Atlanta artists will display their work on the exterior of the historic Flatiron building in downtown Atlanta.

Carlton Mackey and Melissa Alexander are two of those artists. They joined On Second Thought to share how they are approaching the expanse of art, representation and symbolism at this pivotal time of reckoning with racial inequality and violence.

	Activism, Voting Rights, And 'Good Trouble': New Film Highlights Legacy Of Congressman John LewisWhile historic battles for civil rights took place decades ago, the fight for racial justice is erupting on the streets with a new urgency and, as a new film about the legendary activist and congressman shows, the 80-year-old John Lewis is not backing down.&#38;nbsp;
The new documentary from Magnolia Pictures is called John Lewis: Good Trouble. It goes beyond the highlights reel of his storied life and reveals more personal elements of the man and the figure. Director and producer Dawn Porter and producer Erika Alexander joined On Second Thought to share how the film connects his legacy of seeking justice from his youth to his role as a revered congressman today.

Do Businesses Show Their True Colors During LGBTQ Pride Month?

President Bill Clinton declared June as “Gay &#38;amp; Lesbian Pride Month” in 2000. The designation commemorated the Stonewall Riots in Lower Manhattan in June of 1969. Nine years later, President Barack Obama included bisexual and transgender people — the “B” and “T” of LGBT.

Nowadays, rainbow flags are in front yards, tourism posters, along with sponsorship banners and ad campaigns. With brands like Campbell’s Soup, Apple, and Taylor Swift feeling comfortable aligning themselves with Pride, On Second Thought sat down with Georgian members of the LGBTQ community for a conversation about the history of Pride and how corporate commodification has changed the event over time.

Coronavirus Goes Viral: How Online Meme Culture Reflects Our Shared Experience Of A Global PandemicSocial distancing has become the new normal. With borders closing, shelter-in-place orders in California, lockdowns in Europe, and the Trump administration's guidelines to limit gatherings, millions of Americans are shuttering indoors — and spending a lot of time in front of a screen.

And the memes have flourished.&#38;nbsp;So what does online meme culture reveal about how we're processing anxiety over this unprecedented pandemic in a digital world?

Chef Lisa Donovan On The Pain, Progress and 'Perpetual Hunger' Of Life In And Out Of Kitchen Culture
In 2017, the #MeToo movement was exploding across industries. In an essay for Food &#38;amp; Wine, Lisa Donovan went head-on at the treatment of women in the culinary world.

“I refuse to be afraid to say these things out loud any longer, even though it feels terrifying,” wrote the celebrated Nashville-based pastry chef.

That essay, called “Dear Women: Own Your Stories,” won a James Beard Award. Now, Donovan fulfills that imperative herself in a new memoir, called Our Lady of Perpetual Hunger. The book follows her life in and out of kitchens, and the restaurant industry she loved – and later left. It’s a fiery, impassioned and sometimes painful story of a Southern chef who cares more about food than fame.

Musician And Author Billy Bragg Says Free Speech Depends On Accountability, Music On EmpathyBilly Bragg is many things: a poet, punk rocker, folk musician, and singer-songwriter. He’s also an activist, music historian, and best-selling author. In the words of another poet, he contains multitudes.

Bragg’s newest work, The Three Dimensions of Freedom, is a slim volume that makes a weighty argument. It’s a pamphlet in the tradition of Thomas Paine, whose influential polemics helped spark the American Revolution, and later got him convicted of sedition. This new polemic from Bragg takes a match to a contemporary powder keg – free speech – and advocates for more accountability in the public realm.

John Lewis On The Redemption Of The SouthSince the death of John Lewis on July 17, tributes, photographs and stories of the longtime congressman have proliferated across media.&#38;nbsp; “Celebration of Life” events for the beloved civil rights leader – who was born a sharecropper’s son and became known as the “Conscience of The Congress” – will take place for six days beginning on Saturday.

Last Sunday, a crowd of mourners holding candles lined John Lewis Freedom Parkway in Atlanta and marched through the district Lewis represented for more than three decades, ending beneath an enormous mural of the man, whose moral character loomed large over the U.S. House of Representatives and the nation.

Beyond The Bench: Former Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears On A Life Of Breaking BarriersBehind the bench in Georgia's Supreme Court, there is an inscription on the wall. It reads "Fiat justitia ruat caelum". It's Latin for "Let justice be done, though the heavens may fall." While Georgia was one of the last states at the time to establish its high court — in 1846 — there have been many firsts since.

That includes electing the first African-American woman as a Chief Justice, anywhere in the country, in 2005. The Honorable Leah Ward Sears broke a number of other precedents in her climb to the state's highest judicial title, and did not stop there. The now-retired Chief Justice joined On Second Thought to reflect on why she pursued a career in the law, the steep climb from lawyer to judge to the Georgia Supreme Court, and life after stepping down from the bench.

Comedian Hari Kondabolu Brings His Political Humor to Georgia StagesHari Kondabolu is a comedian, writer and podcaster based in Brooklyn, New York. He has performed on "The Late Show with David Letterman," "Conan," "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and more. He's a regular guest on NPR's "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!," and he released his first Netflix comedy special, called "Warn Your Relatives," last year.

In that stand-up special, Kondabolu jokes about serious topics like politics, religion, racial prejudice and white guilt, which, he says, means his comedy may not be for everybody. He joined On Second Thought to talk about touring with his political material, the importance of diversity in comedy and the difference between being funny for a private and public audience.

For Comedian And Actor Scott Adsit, There Are No Mistakes In ImprovComedian and actor Scott Adsit has been on everything from Friends to The Office, but you may know him best as Pete Hornberger from the sitcom 30 Rock. Or perhaps as the voice of Baymax from Big Hero 6.

This weekend, he's in Georgia. Adsit is doing a two-night, four-show run at Dad's Garage in Atlanta. First, he stopped by On Second Thought to share stories about how improv influenced his acting career, why he never really got into stand-up comedy, and his connection to the Marvel Universe.

'The Talk' Is A Rite Of Passage In Black Families. Even When The Parent Is A Police Officer.
For generations, “The Talk” has been a mainstay in African American families. At some point, Black children all get warnings from elders about how to avoid – and survive – police encounters.

It’s a rite that cuts across region, socioeconomic status and profession – even for members of law enforcement.

On Second Thought spoke with four men about how they remember “The Talk,” and how they’ve navigated passing those lessons along to the next generation.

How Artificial Intelligence Reflects Human Biases - And How It Can ImproveWhether you're searching something on Google, assessing a mortgage rate, or applying for a job, much of our lives today is informed by artificial intelligence. Or, the less scary term: intelligent algorithms. While AI helps systems operate quickly, it's not perfect. Like humans, these technologies are only as good as the information they get.

Dr. Ayanna Howard is chair of the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech. She joined On Second Thought to talk about how technology often reflects our own biases, the dangers of employing and blindly believing imperfect AI systems, and how these algorithmic biases can be improved.

With The Resurgence of Protest Culture, Two Design Behemoths On 'The Design of Dissent'As 2019 drew to a close, protests spilled into cities from Hong Kong to Santiago, Paris to Tehran, and Khartoum to La Paz. People around the world flocked to the streets, often with handmade signs, addressing their objections to policy changes, power grabs and cutbacks.

The power of images to communicate disagreement is the subject of an exhibition now on view at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA). "The Design of Dissent" is based on a book of the same title, co-authored by two of the most prominent names in the world of design. Milton Glaser and&#38;nbsp;Mirko Ilic joined On Second Thought to talk about the book and exhibition, and the impact of design in the arena of dissent.&#38;nbsp;

Amid Proposed MARTA Name Changes, A Look At The History And Cultural Importance Of 'Bankhead'This past summer, MARTA was considering renaming five train stations in Atlanta. It was an effort to keep up with changes in the city and to reflect surrounding neighborhoods.

Today, MARTA says no decision on renaming stations has been made, but that they are currently refining the process of making those decisions in the future.

One station proposed to be re-christened: Bankhead. The area was named after the highway that ran through it, which was in turn named after an Alabama family. But the Bankhead name is perhaps more closely associated with the torrent of rap and hip hop that grew from Atlanta's Westside and nearby neighborhoods. So, what's in the name "Bankhead"?

How Hollywood Tackled Fascism In Film To Build American Support For WWIIHollywood's Golden Age and the rise of fascism in Europe were happening at the same time, a world apart. Those worlds collided when Hollywood decided to tackle fascism in film.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. opened the exhibit Americans and the Holocaust last year. Now, a traveling event focuses on how depictions of the Nazi agenda influenced American audiences, and why we fought. The event, called What Were We Watching? Americans Response to Nazism Through Cinema, Radio and Media, takes place Tuesday night at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

From Sammy Davis Jr. To Toomer's Oaks, Mo Rocca Gives New Life To Forgotten Stories In 'Mobituaries'Mo Rocca follows the world of the living as correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning, panelist for Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me, and host of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation.
His other beat is the departed. He is host of the Mobituaries podcast, now in its second season. In it, Rocca tells stories of people and things that have passed through this earthly plain with too little notice, and uncovers little known facets of iconic figures who did get a lot of ink.
His new book, Mobituaries: Great Lives Worth Reliving, pulls together and expands upon "Mobits" of disappeared sitcom characters, forgotten forerunners, ran politicians and extinct artifacts. He joined On Second Thought to tell stories of some of the lively characters — real and fictional — that color the pages of his book.
